Lane Research Project
|
In 2004, Christchurch Mayor Gary Moore guaranteed the young people of Christchurch that everyone in the city under the age of 25 would either be at school, in employment, or in training by [ date?]. To achieve this objective, the Lane Research Project was established, designed to address underachievement in numeracy and literacy in schools. |

There are three major components to the project:
- To scope the problem of literacy and numeracy in Christchurch
- To develop a research around recovery theory, literacy and numeracy programmes and possible evaluations, with a view to establishing recovery programmes for trialing in the community
- To identify what community resources can be utilised to facilitate a pilot programme.
The Lane Research Project was developed at Linwood College in 2005, with researchers Alan Parris, Judy Hutchison and Sue Robinson.
Last year, a major health assessment was carried out on the school’s year 9 and 10 students to identify undiagnosed health issues that may have been impeding their ability to achieve community benchmarks in numeracy and literacy.
The research project is now in its third year, and it is anticipated that by the end of 2007 a numeracy and literacy recovery programme, directed at youth, will be ready for trialing in the community.
